BucureΘ™ti Log #1 - A Self Date

26 Nov 2021

The 23rd day in this strange land.

The past 3 weeks have been a horrid ride of confusion mixed with isolating loneliness that I would have never thought before. It might have driven me astray and crazy if I do not cling to the faith, and to the loved ones who sought out for me. The first night here, I was totally broken. Having been away from my parents with 5,383 miles distance in between the two longing sides, I realize I have no one anymore to rely on. All I have is me, myself, and Allah.

I've been constantly on the run, running and running, to settle all the bureaucracy and settling down. There has never been a day where I can lay rest on the bed, and listen to the heart. My mind and heart is in havoc, and it still is.

After two weeks, I have no tears left to shed, or at least I thought so. It dries up just like the Euphrates River. Having no one to talk to, it was suffocating. For the three weeks, I have no one to talk to. The language barrier worsens it all. But at least, I'm still able to contact my parents, and my one dear friend who is always be there for me despite having a crazily-packed life too. However, as the winter is approaching, the clock went back for one hour, adding to the already distant 5 hours time differences. A 6 hours differences make it difficult to call one's back.

As all the difficulties, anxiousness, insecurities and the loneliness began to swallow me up, I finally opened and poured my heart to my loved ones. And for my that one precious friend, that sacrificed her sleeping hours for me, we talked for hours and hours. I was in a total turbulence, having internal problem that I might burst to crying at any times.

And she gave me this one advice; to do the unexpected, to treat yourself, and to let your heart crawl out. And I did give it a try, it was the happiest moment since I arrived here.

I hopped on the bus and went to Piața Unirii, and let myself wonder around by its own. I finally slow done, and appreciate the magnificent buildings and its people. My main purpose is to actually go to visit the small second-hand bookstore just nearby the metro station. I browsed the books and unfortunately most of them are in Romanian, which I could not decipher yet. However, I did a favour of myself and picked the Romanian translation of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, with the Romanian title of MÒndrie și prejudecată. I talked briefly to the seller who's actually very kind and told me he could bring some Romanian learning book if I want! He told me all girls love P&P and I am 11/10 agree with that, it's my all-time favourite classic story that I wish to read over and over again (:

I went into a valley, and finally it feels like I am truly at Europe, at last. It was intimidating, to be honest. I turn the wrong side and entered a wrong valley which is full of closed pubs and bars, for a midget hijabi girl walking alone, I am scared. But I went through using the map app, and found myself at a lively valley of restaurants full of people. A cramped road, surrounded by tall ancient buildings, it was a pleasure.

And I found a Halal restaurant too over there! I'm guessing it might be Turkish.

Then a friendly in-waiting waitress kindly give me the direction to a beautiful bookstore located just by the end of the street, and it is the bookstore that I've only seen on the instagram! It's called CΔƒrtureΘ™ti Carusel BucureΘ™ti. I was in an utter awe, and I really love the book collection provided.

After spending a 2 hours-ish there, I went out and walk for a little bit to the bus station. Along the way, I found another bookstore, which has a great collection of English books in a more affordable way. I can't hang out for long because I need to go home soon afterward.

There's also a second-hand store right at the corner. As you probably know (or not know), I am a huge fan of second-hand store! Didn't buy anything because I am not in need of clothes right now, but I would like to visit it again soon for some pretty coats.

I stopped by for a moment at a Turkish Mart, which I frequent visit. Though I am saddened by the fact they put us in a dorm very far away from the university (about 45 minutes away), but at least a turkish shop is only 20 minutes away by walk from the dorm, so it's very convenient for me to supply my fridge with some halal ingredients.

And that, basically sums up the instantaneous self-date day I had. It was truly breathtaking to finally slow down the pace in my life and appreciate this new city that'll be the home of mine for the next 4 years (: I would like to spend more time with myself, and giving myself the chance to 'slowly jog', rather than running all time chasing the continuous life.

Thank you for reading this till the end. Though it starts with a quite depressing note, I found peace by the end, at least for now.

Hope you have a great day ahead,
o zi bună! </3

*here are some more picts I took of the streets

With love,

I feel in deep euphoric meeting fellow indonesians or even any muslims here, but whenever we part away, i
always find myself weeping silently knowing that i'm
alone all by myself. Time zone diff make it difficult to
contact my family when they are awake, when evening
approach here, it's already late night at home where
everyone sleeps. I wish to have at least a single soul
here to be a company on these gloomy and lonely
days, and all i ask is for a tough heart and strong will
to cope all this alone, by myself.

Review

Amok revolves around the story of our main protagonist, Prince Mikal of Terang and his struggles in getting back his rightful throne against their biggest enemy, the ruined kingdom of Bayangan. It is a thrilling Malay-Nusantara historical fantasy story that is heavy in the themes faith, loyalty and friendship. Terang is comprised of 3 major cities of ardent worshippers of the god, Kudus. With Maha as the central city where the Sultan and the armies reside under the umbrella of the Kudus strength, Suci the Holy City of the priests who are blessed with the ability to communicate via mirrors, and Impian where the women are bestowed with the gift of mind-reading. The neighbor kingdom, Bayangan is the ultimate nemesis of Terang where wars perpetually occurring for decades which results in the defeat of Bayangan in the hand of Terang. Mikal is the only child of Sultan Samson, making him the first and the only successor on line for the throne and succession of Amok strength, which will be regained in his coming-age. However, despite reaching 15 years old and trained the combat art of silat (martial arts of Nusantara) relentlessly, Kudus never response to him let alone bestowing an ounce of power to him.

This is a stirring story on how a young prince going to fight to restore his kingdom in the path full of thorns and hurdles, while having in internal conflict in the pursuit of his faith on Kudus, and living up to his position as the next ruler of Terang.

I find the worldbuilding and the settings of the story to be very intriguing! I really appreciate the Malay-Nusantara elements in the story and the natural flow of the writings. I have always love the ancient Malay kingdom history when I was in high school and having the chance to read a book in that very same settings totally piqued my excitement to delve into the world. You will find familiar traditional Malay customs and phrases in the book such as calling 'Tok' to honorable elders, 'Baginda Paduka' to address the King, and much more. Though the writings is concentrated with these Malay phrases, worry not, Anna Tan has provided a comprehensive glossary in the last pages for international readers to refer to! We are brought along the story through the POV of Mikal. Plot wise, the story escalated fast but not too fast that it feel abrupt. The flow of the story is just nice to keep your nose hooked on the book to know what'll happen next!

Now, let's move on to our main protagonist, Prince Mikal. Honestly, I have mixed feelings about him. I find myself getting frustrated on him whining and complaining almost all time! I'm most annoyed by him that it was hard to continue reading it, a really self-centered person who can't stand on his own and demanding people around him to cater to the whole situation. However, his situation is fathomable to some extent because; his father, Sultan Samson and those in authorities never bat an eye on him (except Tok Yaakub) before. He wasn't deemed and treated as how a successor should've been. Those folks ignored his position and potential , casting a barrier between Mikal and the politics, just because he hasn't regained the Amok Strength. This lead to him being oblivious and lack the knowledge to lead people. Another note is that he is only 15 years old at that time, few years to go before his coming-of-age. It's the moody phase of a teenager with unstable and fluctuating emotions, hence it's understandable why Mikal is prone to vent his feelings before his logic take place. Who would've imagine that the grand and majestic Kingdom of his own would be in ruin when the sun set on the same day? He was thrown into the chaos and bewilderment without any preparations beforehand. Even though at times I just feel like smacking his head for his immaturity, but I could see where he is coming from, and that kinda stirs a feeling of sympathy and sorrow for his situation. So in conclusion for his character, I would say Anna Tan managed to write the character splendidly, exhibit a realistic dynamic of a prince with huge responsibility, and a confused teenage boy devoid of attention and leading trainings.

The other pivotal character is Yosua. Oh how much I like him! He is my FAVOURITE character in this book (and prolly the reason why I'm eager to finish the book). The friendship and loyalty between him and Mikal is just very earnest . If Mikal is the raging fire, then Yosua is the calming wind, hence complementing each other. I don't think so I have ever seen a story of slaves-master swapped roles before in any story. Indeed, this one is a very unique relationship they have.

All in all, I enjoy the story. The ending was really emotional-stirring :') It was the ending, for a new beginning. It was such a journey to see the growth of Prince Mikal, from a confused teen boy, to a benevolent ruler . Seeing him break through out of his shell, and taking different approach, HIS OWN approach, makes me looking forward to the future he'll be building. I can't wait for the next book in this series! I really hope we'll get to see the mature and wise side of him later on, and how will he restore back the kingdom whilst handling the unceasing hurdles in the future.

R E V I E W

This is the first science non-fiction book that I finished. Since I just started out to read non-fiction books about biotechnology, I picked this up as bioethics is the most concerning aspect talked by the scientists in the pursuit of making new innovations AND also applying it to humans. As we know, starting late 19th century until now, the biotechnology field is blooming rapidly with all the new technology and commercialization in healthcare and private used. Surely, with all the resources and knowledge we have, then we can just enhance our human capability for a better world right? Imagine a world without heritable diseases, human with the ability exceeding the norm, intelligent babies and so on. But,

'Should we do whatever science let us do?',

and that's the title of the first chapter of the book.

It is mesmerizing to think about all the changes we could make to ourselves, it is enthralling that we can create more and more cures for the chronic diseases that has killed thousands and billions of people. But, in the process of finding them, have we ever thought about the process, the experimental subjects? This book tell us briefly about the 'untold' stories of those unfortunates women in Korea who were injected with hormones to produce a large number of eggs and suffered from reproductive illness and imbalance, the African American men who were denied clinical care after being studied and monitored for the diseases, the injustice of the indigenous people being forced to become the experimental subject for drugs tests and so on.

This book is only 121 pages long, and yet managed to tackle the concerning issues in bioethical talking. Although it is really condensed with information, the writer managed to deliver it in a not too-complex way of writing. I think it is a good read for people who want to start knowing about the bioethics, in which everyone should take bioethics into account so that we won't take advantage of our fellow humans in impoverished situation as the subject in clinical trials, and lose our humanity.

The First Week After The Final Sem

5 Jul 2021

 Assalamualaikum and hello everyone.

After a year full of new experiences and lot of crucial decision-making phases, I finished my foundation! To be honest, I wasn't doing well by the end of the semester, useless thoughts attacked me again that made me loss all the composure i've been feigning throughout the semester, which I regretted a lot. But now that it has ended (the semester), I thought I want to escape from this sooo badly. But it seems they still got me leg stuck in it.

ANywAy,

I haven't been able to work on what I'm going to do during this ¬3 months break. But I've been watching some TV Shows and finished 2 books this week, that I thought I would like to share to you here!

W A T C H

1. TVN Hospital Playlist Season 2 (2021)

Of course it gonna be HP!!! I've been waiting (impatiently) for the new season <3 As usual, each episode give me reasons to become a better version of myself and care more of people around myself. I thought I might will try to write about some scenes that touch my heart , and also my thoughts about it in the future!

2. JTBC Law School (2021)

I've watched the first episode weeks ago, but decided to not continue it because I was utterly confused throughout the episode. Honestly, I don't even have the slightest interest in legal dramas because those legal terms and cases always makes my degrade lolol I'm too slow to comprehend it. But then, one of my junior keep posting about the drama so I thought 'why not try another ep?'. I continued this week and dang, I'm hooked till now! There's much more than the legal side of the drama; friendship, betrayal, toxic/abusive relationship, educational value in it. I'm currently on the 9th episode, can't wait to watch more of it! Thankfully it has finished so I can just binge-watch the story haha.

3. HBO Chernobyl (2019)

I watched it during my semester 1 break months ago but left the last episode. I just watched the final episode today and it makes me to scroll through the news of the Chernobyl Disaster for hours. My heart breaks for the families having to leave their residences and works ): I would like to write a separated post about it soon.

R E A D

1. Bioethics by Donna Dickenson

Oh finally the first non-fiction book I finished this year. Currently I'm trying to read books about Biology-Technology to piqued my interest in this field. I guess this is a good book to start with, though it's very condensed in information, but not too detailed.

2. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

YESS My most anticipated read ever! I want to watch Shadow and Bone Tv series but I feel the need to read the books in the Grishaverse first. However, I'm too lazy to read S&B trilogy because my heart was broken the first time I read the first book years ago. haha. So I would like to just read SoC duology before continuing with KoS!

---

So I guess , that's all to sum up my week. Nothing special honestly, just a lazy living thing binge-watching stories and read books to escape from the demanding reality (:

Before SPM; a short Q&A

10 Feb 2021

Assalamualaikum and hello everyone! So a follower of mine asked me 3 questions regarding tips nearing SPM and I thought I would share the not-so-helpful answers here :)

Join telegram groups for each subject, some groups are coordinated by group of teachers themselves and usually they share a lot of tips and tricks, and topic prediction. Just search for the subjects name on telegrams. You can easily access and find files of notes, questions, past papers etc. Bumi Gemilang and After School would be useful too.

There will be chance for it to come out in the real SPM but I can't assure you how high the chances are πŸ˜… I do remember for last year (2019) sejarah in particular, most of the questions asked are the really unexpected one (not asked in trials if I remember it correctly) so it’s hit or miss i guess? Better for u to not just focus on certain parts. Try to at least have a good overall understandings on all topics. I don’t really trust soalan ramalan though because you’ll never know~

Both. But nearing SPM I would suggest you to do more past year questions for Kertas 1 for subject that has A LOT of facts; sejarah, PQS, PSI.  Since it’s more relaxing and easier to do (not really cramping your mind too much nor take a long time to do). Usually they just recycle paper 1 questions from few years before so you will find a lot of questions from last years repeated!

When answering the objective question,  WRITE ALL FACTS that know about the topic/subtopic of the question asked. For example, the question is asking for sumbangan tamadun Mesopotamia. So, you write beside it other facts about Mesopotamia that you know; seni bina, nama kerajaan, sistem sosial etc. That way you can enhance your memorisation and identify the part that you still have not memorise yet. This tip is helped me a lot nearing SPM.

For other subjects like Addmath, and science subjects. You need to cover all Paper 1 and Paper 2.  But I would emphasize on complex questions  ; long calculation, Paper 2 structures and essays. But make sure you already have the foundation of all topics before doing this. If not, refine first your understandings of the basic concepts. If you didn't even master the basic concept, it would be really hard for you to answer an even harder question.

But please take those above as a grain of salt though. I personally don’t rely on predictions/target topics at all, I don't even glance on those predicted questions given by my teachers because I feel better and lot more confidence when knowing I have cover everything in the syllabus rather than just focusing on some topic. Also, I am afraid it will make change my 'intention' of studying; feel like I am just sitting SPM for getting marks rather than to test my understandings and knowledge that I've tirelessly accumulated for 5 years of high school.

BUT that's just my personal 'feelings'. If you really feel like you need to focus on target topics, especially if you are running out of time and couldn't cover all LAST MINUTE, then go on, it might (or might not) be helpful for you. You do you :)

What's more important is to really work on topics you’re weak at till the day of the examination. Make sure you understand ALL topics. (Except for Addmath since it’s better to focus on what we want to answer later) . Ask your teachers and friends to clarify on the part you're still lost at. That way, it doesn’t really matters what kind of questions comes out, as long as u have good understanding of all topics, you’ll most probably get to answer it :)

Lastly, take care of your health, physically and mentally. Don't torture yourself over your limit, it's not gonna do you any good. Have faith on yourself, pray to Allah S.W.T, have ΨͺَوَΩƒُّΩ„‎ and Ψ±ΨΆΩ‰ .

and pat yourself in the back, ' hey, you've made it this far, I'm proud of you :') '

All the best all, sikit je lagi till merdeka! You can do it! :)

Pre-Uni Sem 1; its people

24 Jan 2021

The sem break is ending. Auch

We gonna need to move back to the college dorm, quite excited but considering the messy situation we are having now, well, a bit heavy hearted.

But, let’s recap back the first semester. I might separate this into two post: People, and Studies

Wasn’t excited to start pre-Uni and moving out of Uni. But by time goes, it wasn’t that bad. I find the learning environment is good, and the people are also good. What I like the most are my housemates. I am very grateful to be placed in the same house with them. I had a very fun time, and learnt a lot from them.

I think the biggest blessing for half of the last year is the opportunity to meet and befriend these precious souls. I can’t imagine being placed in another house with other strangers :’)

As you probably know (or not know), despite my friendliness, I am a very distant and conservative person. And that worries me the most, my inability to blend with the society, with the thick wall i set myself from the outer world. But they helped me in bringing it down, though not totally. I feel safe and jubilant whenever they are around, not feeling annoyed or something. They’re the only reason I can cope living there :’)

Now, shall we talk about my classmates?

They’re very outgoing, respectful and helpful! I was scared at first to meet a GROUP of new people. I remember sweating and getting nervousness all over my veins on the first day. But a few souls being kind to myself and help to introduce myself to others, very grateful <3

They are also very helpful in term of studies. I don’t feel reluctant to seek help from them. And there are a few names who had been a great help for me throughout the semester.I believe in the ‘barter system’, which in this case is, if you want someone to help you, then you need to offer your hand first. And if you are unable to do so, then try your best for giving the alternatives, manner matters! That’s what living in the community is, complementing each other and respecting the boundaries <3

I think this semester taught me how to be ‘a people of the society’. To reach out to people and start opening up myself for new encounters. It was myself who set the biggest barrier of myself from the world. But being in a group of people for a few months, help me to open up bit and bit. That’s why, I am exhilarated for the new sem, to have more human interaction. And i hope i’ll get to learn new things from others too, for the betterment of myself in the present, and the future :’)

Turbulence of Mind II

22 Jan 2021

Lately, there has been a lot of things circulating my mind. And it seems like I can’t grasp each of them and put them into the ‘cabinets’ in my mind, respectively.

The thoughts are scattered and packed that makes my mind feel too dense and heavy, and hard to think realistically.

One morning, I feel jubilant and looking forward for the day. Then, the storm comes at night and destroyed every positive thoughts and dream I have during the day. It’s a perpetual cycle. I still don’t know how to control my thoughts and emotions.

A wise friend of mine once said that, 9 out of 10 of our problems came from out own thoughts. As simple as she said, when I think back, oh that’s really true. Mind holds the ultimate power over ourselves.

From thoughts, we daydream and speculate, there comes the imagination, and we plan. From the plan, we start to act, working towards the dream.

But from thoughts also, sad thoughts, we strained our thinking, degrading and demeaning our own worth, destroying all the lights and hopes we once had. We still plan, a self-destructing plan. Shutting the door from outward reach. And in the end, we succumb to the devil of our ownselves.

This makes me realise, the ultimate enemy is actually our own self. Yes, other people can say all the meanest thing and trick us into demeaning self. But we hold the choice, on letting their words to reach us, or put a solid protective wall against the world.

But, we are also the ultimate friend to our own poor self. If we nurture our thoughts with wise and hopeful seeds, it will grow and mould us into a better person, a person who loves themselves the most. Needn’t to find a person to valid yourself, because the very person who is able to do that lays inside yourself.

And I find it endearing to think that way :)

I’m still in a patchy, rough road full of thorns in the process of loving and embracing myself. But I’m working hard for it.

And I hope you will too.

Good luck for us :) and thank you for reading till the end . (I honestly would expect no one to read this, and it would be embarrassing if people DO read my writings πŸ˜³ haha)

Review

A story of Robin, Charlie and Ken voyaging in a new adventure exploring Kuching, Sarawak along with Robin’s lovey-dovey parents and their girl friends; Siti and Chloe. It was an enjoyable and light read packed with humour and adventures. Following them embarking in a journey together to explore the nature and the beauty of Sarawak thrilled me! I feel exhilarated and amused by the description of the place they went to, it feels like I am tagging along their memorable adventure.

My favourite moment of the book is when they visits Semenggoh Wildlife Centre to see Orangutan, a special species that’s in danger of extinction, where their frantic encounter with the Orangutans would end up becoming a crucial aid for them in the end. Another one is when they eat Durian, the most superior King of the Fruit. Seeing Ken changing his immense hatred towards Durian to likeness reminds me of being in the same shoes as him as I was also once a durian-hater haha, but the table has turns now. Also for Charlie, thoughI feel a bit sorry to him for having all the misfortunes befalling him, but since he is the most spoiled and quite a conceited one, it’s good that he learnt his lessons from all the incidents and see them a brighter side.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to local and international reader who want to know more about the beauty of Sarawak , this book can literally serve as your Sarawak travel itinerary (and also if you enjoy middle-grade graphic novel!). It is a heartwarming story centred around the theme of family-bonding and friendship, along with braveness and loyalty! Can’t wait to see more of Robin, Charlie and Ken’s thrilling adventure in the future.

Diary of A Rich Kid by Malcolm Mejin

4 Jan 2021

SYNOPSIS

HOW would your life be if you had so much money that it could fill the entire ocean? For Sarawakian Malcolm Mejin, he would travel all around the world in his private jet. He would also own the latest gadgets, the likes of which are so expensive that they could only be afforded by the wealthiest.

It’s such a good fantasy that Malcolm decided to pen it all down in his latest book, Diary of a Rich Kid, whose plot centres on a group of privileged, wealthy kids who lead the most lavish, extravagant lifestyle filled with excitement, suspense and adventure ― peppered with some humour.

REVIEW

Had a really great laugh experience throughout reading the book. The story is like Crazy Rich Asian but make it TEEN VERSION. It’s such a light reading that could be enjoyed by people regardless of ages. I love how the story is fast-paced with twists here and there πŸ’ƒ.  The characters are very admirable, it’s fun to see how the three friends are spending some quality time over the holiday together (+ with the ‘uninvited’ family members πŸ˜πŸ˜‚) The quarrel between Robin and the drama-king Charlie with Ken as the mediator in the end of every fight will never cease to make me laugh! I think they really complement each other very well in their friendship The story brings so much fun to the table; but also with lessons incorporated subtly by the authors; eg; toleration between friendship, family-love and also braveness in unexpected circumstances! It’s also cute how Robin is always craving for Sarawak Laksa despite all the lavish meal served to him, I guess we all will always have ‘that one’ local delicacy dominating our appetite no matter where we are. Another note, there’s also Amanda (the star who stole the limelight of the story), a ferocious creature yet also poor, seeing how she always shows up whenever the 3 are there, seems like she’s lonely and wanting to eat befriend them! Haha. The twist in the end oof- I wasn’t expecting that! πŸ™Š

In short; it is a good read if you’re seeking some kind of light kid-comedy story amidst the chaos of life.
